Kelly Wearstler brings her world home

Kelly Wearstler has long occupied cult status in interiors: the Los Angeles designer whose spaces feel less decorated than composed, charged with a confident collision of sculptural form, saturated materiality and unexpected glamour. Her signature is maximal but never messy – an assured language of graphic geometry, tactile finishes and pieces that make a room feel immediately more cinematic. I remember when she launched her RTW collection for several seasons, and it was always a pleasure to see in Paris. We all drooled over her bespoke furniture pieces and small objects too.

Now, her visual universe is being translated for H&M HOME in its first-ever furniture collaboration: a 29-piece collection spanning modular seating, tables, lighting and decorative objects. It's an important move not simply because it makes Kelly’s high-voltage sensibility more accessible, but because it brings the designer’s architectural way of thinking into the everyday. It's a smart move from H&M, launching in tandem alongside how Zara has picked up designers that would never normally be in the budget realm of their customer but by convincing the likes of a Vincent Van Duysen has opened the gates for the high-wattage power of Kelly's touch.

At the heart of Kelly's collection are furniture forms designed to shift with their setting. The cloud-like SOLUNA lounge chair can be combined into a sofa; the compact, plush POMA chair becomes a loveseat in pairs; and the round ORTRA sofa table expands when multiplied. Elsewhere, faceted chairs, metal clothing rails, marble-like surfaces and sculptural lamps speak to the designer’s familiar interest in contrast - soft against hard, functional against fantastical, polished against tactile.

“The opportunity to challenge both my own skills and those of my studio, while creating something artisanal yet accessible, was incredibly exciting,” Kelly says. “We began by questioning how objects can shape a space - creating sculptural pieces that feel expressive, tactile, and designed to endure.”

The collaboration is also the first—and, for now, only—H&M designer project to encompass both furniture and ready-to-wear simultaneously. An eight-piece fashion capsule extends the same vocabulary into the wardrobe: strong-shouldered tailoring, languid denim, a leather-collared trench and a vase-printed slip dress. It is Kelly’s world rendered at every scale, from the chair you sink into to the clothes you leave home in.

For a designer famed for creating complete environments, the two categories feel naturally intertwined. It's great to see her bring her vision to a wider audience in this new collaboration.
