Don’t know about you but here in London, we’re feeling a little bit cosy this week. For now, it feels like Autumn has, at last, arrived on our doorstep and we’re ready to throw on some knitwear, swap our sandals for boots and woolly socks and most importantly swaddle ourselves in the much-loved outerwear that has been hiding away in the back of our wardrobes, as we prepare to embark on the cooler seasons.

If there’s one thing Italian fashion house MaxMara is renowned for it is its iconic, precision-crafted coats for the colder months. For over seven decades, MaxMara has dressed generations of women in its outerwear that ranges from cashmere overcoats and sweeping capes to the more fashion-forward Teddy Bear coat.

Plush and enveloping, cuddly and adorable, the MaxMara Teddy Bear is the coat version of your cosiest childhood toy. Relatively minimalistic in terms of design, with its dropped shoulders, oversized fit and relaxed pockets, the secret is its luxurious blend of alpaca and mohair, on a base of silk which makes it the closest thing to a comfort blanket you’d want to wear as an adult. The snug staple has been a sell-out commercially since it first appeared on the runway in 2013 and its many iterations since have proved just as successful.

After a short hiatus, the return of the Teddy Bear coat on the runway in 2017 has seen a kaleidoscope of colourways – from bold cerulean, cyan and magenta to frosty white, adorned with beaded seahorse embellishments – expanding its audience, favoured by Julia Roberts and our very own Fashion Director Caroline Issa alike.

For Autumn/Winter 2023, the brand opened its show with a snug hooded version, which is optimum for dress-gown-esque lounging. While most recently, the brand has launched the Sparkling Teddy Coat in the Camel and White, and the Mini Teddy Coat for kids.

Why the news? It celebrates 10 years this season, and with it, MaxMara has launched the Teddy Ten Pop-Up in Harrods, until November 15th 2023. Taking place on the ground floor of the storied department store, the interactive Teddy Pop-Up will allow customers to purchase special edition products.
