It is said that Napoleon once slated England for being “a nation of shopkeepers” but we’re certain that even the late French Emperor would have been impressed by Erdem’s flagship store on 70 South Audley Street.

Walk through the glass doors and you’re greeted by magnificent marble floors, simple brass details and an elegant spiral staircase that leads down to a big velvet lounge in the deepest shade of green. Needless to say, we never wanted to leave, or prise ourselves from the velvet.

The mastermind behind the store’s design is Erdem Moralioglu’s long time partner and collaborator, the architect Philip Joseph, a man who captured the essence of the Erdem woman and gave her a permanent residence. We raid the imaginary muse’s autumn/winter 2016 closet. And what did we find?

A cape worthy of Catherine de Medici’s presence, a coat so decadent that even Tolstoy would have written about it, a black floral dress trimmed with black velvet straps – perfect for afternoon tea at a Royal palace, a pair of red loafers reminiscent of a good bottle of Bordeaux, a metallic heel that even Prince Charming wouldn’t want to return, and lastly –  a pair of earrings and a hair barrette that look like they deserve their own glass case inside of the V&A’s fine jewellery collection.
