Animal Collective have made a name for themselves as a band who continuously search out new sonic ideas, so it should come as no surprise that Centipede Hz tore up the template their last record laid down. Gone are the smooth textures are standard arrangements, in comes a world of radio static, fuzz and linear developments. 'Applesauce' is maybe the track on the record that could've been plucked from their last, but it's groove also harks back to the weird rhythmic arrangements of their first few records, and so feels like a primer for the band as a whole.

What with Girls having split up after two not-quite-perfect but always heartbreaking and beautiful records, we've been waiting for what Christoher Owens would do next. Well 'Here We Go' is a not-quite-perfect but beautiful and heartbreaking slender ode in the vein of Bert Jansch, lot's of flute and organ and a brief lick of electric guitar.

Like some wonderful nugget of chart straddling pop music refracted through the prism of maniacal weirdness. It all seems so familiar, the tribal rolling drums, the snakey trebly guitar lines, the call and response vocals, yet its familiarity is actually the uncanny, spookiness of deja vu, that's it not really what you though it was.
