Montreal natives Suuns recently released their debut album 'Zeros QC' on the consistently brilliant Secretly Canadian. The album is a beautiful exercise in the abstraction and degeneration of melody, in the manipulation of darkness and shade, glorious rays of light shoot through in almost-epic guitar lines, before they are consumed by the depth they are trying to penetrate.

'Up Past the Nursery' is all twitching and flinching vocals, recoiling like snakes, creeping over mangled guitars, slinking past trembling drums. The darkness though, is offset, never all consuming, or too imposing, like chiaroscuro it's there for contrast, adding layer of depths in shades of brown, grey and black.

Experimental New Yorkers Parts & Labor have been around for just around a decade now, built around Dan Friel and B.J. Warshaw, they've had a rotating line-up of drummers and guitarists, but are back to a stripped down three piece for their fifth album, Constant Future, which continues to mine the same brilliant wave of warm noise they've always done. The album is built up around the sort of fist-pumping hooks that could fill stadiums if they weren't being brutally subjugated to expressionistic swathes of red-light pushing feedback and analogue hum.

I once spent an evening with Deptford Goth, we were drinking apple juice in an alleyway in Peckham, eating pistachios and chucking the empty shells into a bin. After that I kept on seeing him around, coming out of Old Street tube station, walking through the sunshine on New Cross Road, in a gallery in Peckham. All brief encounters over about two weeks, but he slowly started worming his way through my life.

In the same way, there's something incredibly special about his music, yet its so incredibly understated that its impossible to fully articulate, and it may not seem like it will on first listen, it can almost slip past you, yet it'll insidiously work its way in without even realising.
