Spectre is the shadowy project of Brooklyn producer, journalist and WordSound Recordings boss Skiz Fernando, an instrumental outfit operating somewhere in the sinister spaces between dub, industrial and hip-hop. Fernando established WordSound as a self-proclaimed "guerilla think tank" in 1994, releasing the Crooklyn Dub Consortium: Certified Dope, Vol. 1 compilation the following year and helping birth the illbient genre in the process.

The Illness is Spectre's debut and the first part of a 'trilogy of terror' that also includes The Second Coming and The End, and is perhaps best to described as Massive Attack producing Wu-Tang Clan in a coffin full of acrid weed fumes, teasing out the lurking menace between kick and snare in ways similar to dub visionaries Kode9 and Kevin Martin of The Bug notoriety. Like those two, Fernando also has something of the intellectual and cultural malcontent about him, but whatever: if it's blazing up a fat one and proposing a toast to the end times you're after, Spectre's your go-to guy.
