Elbows off the table, hands in laps

At the top of an old Victorian house already serving as Antoni & Alison’s store, the fashion designers have created café Ye Olde World, Super Modern. The room was formerly a space hidden from customers for the designers to sit and dream up collections in, but it has now been transformed into a coffee shop luring its customers with the promise of cake. “We always felt the shop was incomplete – it was like a cake without a cherry on top. This café is our cherry,” say the designers. Customers can now make their way up the narrow staircase to sip hot drinks from fine bone china cups designed by the pair. Not only is the shop the duo's new venture but it also marks 25 years in the industry. We look back at their collections across the decades.

Ye Olde World, Super Modern is at number 43 Rosebery Avenue, EC1 open from November 30th. antoniandalison.co.uk

    N-Dani The African Fashion Project

Selfridges has teamed up with Style House Files, the organisers of Lagos Fashion and Design Week, one of Africa’s leading fashion showcases, to present the best of contemporary African fashion. Featuring a handpicked edit of the most outstanding designers showing at Lagos, N-Dani, which stems from the Swahili word for “inside”, grants us an inside look into Nigeria’s flourishing fashion scene. With Lagos fashion veterans such as Lisa Folawiyo’s label Jewel by Lisa, Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Eki Orleans, Odio Mimonet and Tiffany Amber, N-Dani also showcases young talents such as Jennifer Adighije’s label House of Silk and Agu, set up by Agu Anumudu. Conjuring up African traditions and imagery with powerful authority, these designers weave traditional African prints, patterns and even fabrics such as Ankara, into ready-to-wear and couture designs that will feel right at home at Selfridges. From Eki Orleans’ signature blown up prints and empire-line dresses to Jewel by Lisa’s heavily embellished ensembles celebrating the body jewellery of the Fulani women, the designers part of N-Dani will give you a glimpse of a whole new fashion world; one that will lure you in to see and want more.

From 1st December until the end of January at Selfridges.

    Purple Kane

The pressure is mounting to find the most sensational party dress. That show-stopping number that will not elicit a raised eyebrow from the boss at your Christmas party and will prompt oohing and ahhing from friends, family and colleagues. Where, oh where do you find that holy grail? At Christopher Kane.

Made from tulle just sheer enough to be sexy, flocked with black roses for a dose of drama and with a hemline long enough to be demure, Kane’s dress will be the belle of the ball. Even after the crackers have been pulled and the New Years champagne has been guzzled.

Though pretty in purple, its leather piping and dark velvet flowers allude to the designer’s subversive inspiration; this is Kane after all. Last collection’s iridescent floral dresses were based on the bedrooms of council estate girls while this season’s collection plays with themes taken from Al Pacino’s gay-serial-killer thriller, Cruising. Like the very best of his kind, Kane takes the most unglamorous and unappealing subjects – in this case the sleazy side of a New York subculture and murder – and transforms them into objects of affection you would sell everything else in the wardrobe for.
