    ALEXANDER WANG DRESS

Chloe loves this… because this dress is sportswear influenced fashion at its sexiest. In tight stretch-cotton, with cut-outs and a high hemline Alexander Wang infuses his already urban aesthetic with an audaciously sporty overtone. Wang is having a seriously sporty moment as his varsity inspired spring/summer collection is already recognisable for it's all-American football themed sweaters and dresses.

His sportswear inspiration is not a new thing: from the studded baseball caps of his first full collection in spring 2007, to the leather boxing shorts of spring 2009 and the recurring appearance of racer-back vests and grey jersey sweaters throughout. This season his efforts have finally come to fruition as we see sportswear coming through as a major trend. From the outright tennis whites seen at Hermès and Lacoste, to the more athletic tight dresses with speed stripes and a healthy dose of elastane, as seen at Josh Goot. Alexander Wang's point of reference falls somewhere between the two: some shapes reference American football as directly as Hermès references tennis, while his tighter dresses reference aerobics and athletics with more subtlety and a consistent emphasis on the sex appeal of sports.

    MARIOS SCHWAB SATIN DRESS

Annabel loves this… because this Marios Schwab dress proves that finite intelligent detailing can enhance minimalist design, making a piece interesting and modern. A satin pleated top section features discretely stitched bust detailing whilst its subtle boxy shape and light pink tone distinguishes it from the cream pencil skirt below. Together, these two seemingly separate pieces form a dress of modernist impact and gentle intricacies.

Reference to the form-fitting dresses for which Mario Schwab is known, this Greek-Austrian designer is breaking his self-created mold by committing more obviously to themes; disjointed construction being the presiding theme in Marios' spring/summer 2010 collection. Taking inspiration from the flipbooks of his childhood, outfits are spliced into three interchangeable sections or more simply put: legs, middle and top. This dress is a less extreme variation on a collection that turned out floor-length undulating chiffon skirts, cinched at the hips by satin pleating and complemented with abruptly cropped shirts and jackets. His subtle execution of detailing on the bust is a gentle nod to the under-wear as well as outer-wear trend that's exemplified by this season's bustier dresses as seen at Antoni Berardi and John Galliano's Dior. Pleats: horizontal, broad and simplistic in Schwab's creation, have proved to be a versatile trend, from sweet gingham dresses at Christopher Kane to a dramatic jumpsuit at Lanvin.

His autumn/winter collection to come is inspired by his Austrian upbringing, but for now our Austrian dreams can wait. We want constructed minimalism in a dress!

    YSL BLUE SHIFT DRESS

Chloe loves this… because Stefano Pilati has conquered the near impossible and given us an entire look to wear straight off the catwalk. Its subtle pleating on the shoulder blades and oversized external pockets add a new, well-constructed twist to this linen YSL shift dress. Long sleeves and high neckline evoke monastic sentiments that are made modern by a shock of cobalt blue. The ensemble is brought together by a matching grey suede belt that neatly nips in the waist. Essentialle Grey suede heels provide the perfect platform for this reformed shift and are a clear evolution from the classic Tribute shoe; a high-heeled nod to this season's kitten-heel trend.

Seen previously in Pilati's YSL collection for spring/summer 2008, cobalt blue has made a re-appearance this season. From a similarly modest all out use in a floor-length dress at Cerrutti, to contrasted colour blocking in RM by Roland Mouret to sporadic flashes in Alexander McQueen's futuristic prints; its omnipresence has been both subtle and outright. Equally present this season was a new appreciation of the 'sensible' heel as Stefano Pilati was not the only designer using structural and engineering twists to create a fashionably comfortable heel. From Prada's transparent perspex block heel to Chanel's chunky wooden clogs, YSL's bridged heel is yet another example of this fashion loophole for which we are all grateful.
