Reverting to Type
Reverting to Type is a font of words of wisdom. Words of wisdom in great fonts, in fact - because this is an exhibition I a showcase of contemporary letterpress practitioners, all showing how an ancient craft can still be relevant, beautiful and wall-worthy in the digital age. For anyone who didn't manage to catch the exhibition in the snowy run up to Christmas, it is well worth making the resolution to visit and shop for its second leg this month.
Curated by Graham Bignell of New North Press and graphic designer Richard Ardagh, the show in the Standpoint Gallery off Hoxton Square highlights the current resurgence of interest in handprinted type, through prints, posters, cards and publications most of which are for sale. Pick up a daily reminder from Hi Artz Press that 'London It's Near Paris Ain't It" or just relish in the inky words as they spell out, in Hand & Eye's case treasures like "Awopbopbaloopop". Mr Smith, another favourite, reminds us that Letterpress Isn't Just For Christmas, which of course by now we know.
