In our Western, capitalist-centred world innovation is key. There is nothing we want for (unless, of course, we are told that we do) but what we do want we want to be as functional and as pretty as possible. And, in our Western, capitalist-centred world, competition is vital in making sure that we, the all-powerful consumers, get the best possible product.
Brit Insurance Design of the Year is an annual awards and exhibition organised by the Design Museum. Every year, the exhibition presents over a hundred projects, nominated by experts, fielding the best in design across architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport. The awards, held this year on 15 March, included Uniqlo +J, in the Fashion section for German designer Jil Sander's collection for the high street retailer; the Open Air Library by KARO Architekten and Architektur+Netzwerk in the Architecture section; but the big winners were British designer Samuel Wilkinson and product design company Hulger for their sculpted re-design of the energy-saving lightbulb.
