    Beauty trends

Back away from the sheer soft colours: we are not doing pastels this spring. Seasonal beauty trends can be a bit formulaic: berry-lipped, smokeyeyed sirens for winter, sweet ice-cream shades at the first sign of spring and beach babes dripping in gilded bronzer for high summer. But the spring/summer 2013 shows ignored the palette of sugared almonds for a more intense feel.

Eye make-up aficionados should look out for warmer brown eyeshadows as hazy terracotta shades circled the models eyes. The favoured colours were rust, peach, warm and gold toned. These shades add intensity and definition but avoid the sooty-eyed racoon look of a traditional dark eye. At Theyskens’ Theory a matte peach shadow was softy smudged around the eye and faded seamlessly into the skin for a gaze which hints at the “morning after the night before” with a soft slept-in appeal.

At Louis Vuitton the look was anchored with black eyeliner and mascara for a doll-eyed ’60s edge. At Chloé metallic orange was drawn in a winged cat-eye shape across the lids for a more graphic take. MAC pigment in Copper Sparkle, £17, applied with a damp brush gives the shine and precision needed for this look. For the colour-shy, the brow is where you can add strength and definition. Whilst the stronger brow has been in fashion for a while, the shape is now straighter and less arched than you might be used to drawing. If you want to get technical about it, the arch is still there, however, it is straighter and at a less acute angle. Putting your protractors aside, keep the width even throughout, no squiggly tadpole brows. Giving a definite nod to ’90s androgyny the brows are natural, full and strong. Diane Kendal at Alexander Wang’s show gave us the template which she has been perfecting over the past few years to arrive at the signature Wang brow look.

Where lips took centre stage they were not shy. There was less red lipstick around but a lot of neon in its place. From the matte, blood-orange lip against bare faces at Paul Smith to the dab of intense, high-vis orange in the centre of the lips of the models at Erdem – these are lips that are saturated with pigment and worn to be seen at 50 paces. The key to such intense colour is layering. Lucia Pieroni at Missoni mixed orange, magenta and white cream colour to get the fluoro pink lip and then topped it with loose red pigment to get the matte finish. “When you mix it, it kind of gets orange, like tequila sunrise, “ she explains. For a one-step product to achieve the look, Giorgio Armani’s Lip Maestro range of liquid lipsticks, £26, gives the most saturated punch of colour we have seen to date.

And now to the wild card: a slick of bold yellow eyeliner as seen on the model Lais Ribeiro at Kenzo. Whilst it might only work on her glowing, honey-toned skin and almond-shaped eyes, it shows that a tiny stroke of the right colour, highlighting your best feature, can have more of an impact than a whole painted face.
