The beautiful, talented and thoroughly lovely Corinne Bailey Rae
stars in our latest beauty video. Corinne slips into character and
talks us through the her thoughts on beauty, the roaring 20s and
what inspired her look.
Why the 20s?
"I love the glamour of the 1920s era. The
decadence is especially poignant from the vantage point of history,
in terms of what's around the corner. It was a last indulgent
hooray for the wealthy before The Great Depression and Second World
War.
The style was so distinctive with the paste
jewellery and bobbed hair. Women wore dropped-waist dresses, a sign
of their liberation. At last no more long unwieldy dresses and no
more corsets.
I'm looking forward to seeing The Great Gatsby
movie when it comes out. The director Baz Luhrmann is perfect for
it."
The look
"It's fun to have my hair shorter and a dark lip
which I rarely wear. I enjoyed my purple nails, although they had
to come right off so I could play my guitar!"
Behind the look
Inspired by the silent movie actresses of the
1920s we went strong on both eyes and lips. Kay often starts eye
makeup with a soft pencil eyeliner. Working it into the lashes the
aim is to get a lot of product around the eye, it doesn't need to
be precise. Kay then used her fingers and a small firm brush to
blend the eyeliner out all around the eye and onto the lid. This
acts as a base to give the powder eyeshadow depth and make the
colour more vivid. The eyeshadow used was a beautiful duochrome
colour from the new bareMinerals READY eyeshadow collection.
Flashing blue and brown in different lights, it has a soft texture
as well as intense pigment.
When you can't quite get the colour you want... create your own.
Kay blended two lipsticks to get Corinne's deep cherry lips.
Chanel's Rouge Coco in Rouge Noir was applied first all around the
lips with a brush. Then a deeper denser colour, TopShop's lipstick
in Beguiled, was patted on top. The combination creates a deep
three-dimensional lip, rather than looking dark and flat.
