    James Read: The Retro Tan

Global Tanning Expert James Read first grabbed our attention with his ever popular Tanning site 'The Tantalist'.  Starting out as a Sartorialist street snapper for tans, James has developed the site into an enormous platform for his work which now graces the elite magazines, catwalks and, of course, celebrity pins.

We asked James to make some tanning videos exclusively for Because Magazine and here is the first in a series of two:  this season's 'Retro Tan'.

    Other Products used:

Xen Tan Absolute Luxe Dark Lotion, £39.99

He-shi Quick & Easy Express Liquid Tan, £37

    James Top Tanning Tips:

For a wash off, lotion or liquid tan you want to work our way down the body.  Using a tanning mitt, begin by applying the lotion to the face before working down the body, leaving the hands and feet till last.

James recommends not using latex gloves as they can actually tear and rub the skin, which will give you an uneven tan.  Using a mitt or your bare hand will ensure that the tan looks perfect.

Glide the product down the body in even strokes.  Be careful not to over rub as the tan will become patchy or uneven.

Remember that in all cases, however dark you go, you want your tan to look natural.  If your do want to go darker, apply a second layer of tan 10 minutes after the first application.  Don't leave your top up till the next day as that will give you unwanted build up on the skin.

To highlight certain areas of the body for uber toned definition, work with the natural lines of the body.  Using an instant spray on tan (like L'Oreal Express Spray), spray the contouring lines and then use a mitt to buff the product into the skin.

    Kay Montano: Homage to Couture

As we welcome in a new season of lips and cheeks and eyes, we wave goodbye to the last in style.  Inspired in part by the work of Peter Phillips at Chanel Couture SS11 and in part by Kay's own love of couture and high end makeup we bring you Kay Montano:  An Homage to Couture.

Aside from the gorgeous Chanel SS11 collection Kay is using the brand new Sisley Ultra Stretch Mascara in Deep Black, (£37, available in March) to up the lash volume.  The perfect partner to the feathered lids.

Also featured is the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lip colour in Boy which launches in March.

    Kay Montano: Louis Vuitton SS11

Visual Beauty Tips From Lonon's Top Makeup Artist

We fell in love with this look back in September when the Louis Vuitton SS11 girls strutted the runway in lace and oriental silk.  Kay recreated the chocolate smokey eyes using Mac Satin & Taupe Eyeshadow and blended the shade right up into the brows.  Her interpretation also involved the gorgeous Myface.Cosmetics Blingtone in Morococo applied with her fingertip over the moveable part of the eye (exactly where the light catches it.)  There's nothing quite like the glistening texture of the Lord & Berry Black Eye Pencil to define and eye and with a top up of Chanel Inimitable Mascara the eyes were good to go.

Kay loves the brand new Pure Colour Long Lasting Lipstick range and she picked the glamorous Plum Couture to bring the look together.  (We teamed this with Estee Lauder Pure Colour Nail Varnish in 04 Berry Desire.)

All that is left now is to pick up your Louis Vuitton lace fan and clip on your 30s style earings.

Hairstylist Elvire Roux used L'Oreal Techni Art products to sweep model Blake's hair back into a low, slick up do.
