Pillow talk
KASSL Editions and BD Barcelona relaunch the iconic Pillow Sofa
Originally the brainchild of Belgian furniture design duo Muller Van Severen (composed of the married Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen), the first Pillow Sofa was brought to life by German clothing company KASSL Editions. In the years since, it has become one of the brand's most enduring forays into design.
In its initial conception, The Pillow Sofa came with the option of pieces in 6 different colours, all modular, and able to be easily switched around in production. When taken apart, the settee’s individual seat-pieces look almost identical to the KASSL Pillow Bag, not only in colour, but in shape; with long handles and a body that reminds one of a tote. This genius aspect of the couch can be ascribed to Muller Van Severen, whose minimalistic approach to furniture design reconfigures the bare bones of objects with a playful approach, blending their fine art background into design.
On August 18th, Muller Van Severen and KASSL will relaunch a new, even more stylish re-edition of The Pillow Sofa, alongside curatorial furniture company BD Barcelona. The couch’s more modern and sleek re-design cheekily resembles a PVC fetish love sofa, in its all-black, glossy lacquer cotton, again extracted from the high-quality fabrics used in KASSL accessories.
“We’ve always been drawn to shine,” Muller Van Severen explained, ”the reflecting surface brings the piece to life”. Some updates to the sofa's functional design were added as well, as BD Barcelona states: “We’ve simplified the modular system and optimized assembly, enhancing its bold silhouette and playful character. Now, the Pillow is a dynamic, sculptural piece that invites playful expression”.
Materialized and rooted in the KASSL ethos and style, the original Pillow Bag was developed out of high-quality production offcuts, and its closely related child, The Pillow Sofa, will be made out of the same sustainable and durable fabrics. Now brought back to life by the well-established furniture experts BD Barcelona, in collaboration with the brand and Muller Van Severen, the sofa is set up to become an icon of playful, sustainable design.
