Workout Your Brain
Moleskine comes to London Design Week to remind us of the power of pen and paper.
There are many things one expects to find at London Design Week, and stationery is not top of the list. Yet the iconic notebook company Moleskine is coming to town, championing the power of analog brainstorming in an AI age. A timely intervention as Moleskine knows the importance of the power of pen and paper, introducing the Brain Gym installation with hands-on workshops to take place throughout LDW. From the 16th until 18th of September, at Design London Shoreditch you'll find yourself immersed in Moleskine’s experimental space, all designed to help you work out your brain.
The notebook giant encourages its users to workout their brain through handwriting and drawing. You’ll also find drawing classes, a “Biscuit Bar” in collaboration with Sons of Beasly, a furniture-making project which produces its pieces entirely with wood off-cuts and space to scribble on the “Wall of Shared Creativity”, a blank canvas for visitors to contribute to with sketches, notes and everything in between.
Moleskine’s manifesto; The Power of Pen and Paper is the inspiration behind the activation. It highlights how handwriting activates deep cognitive functions, enhances wellbeing, and fosters creativity — and how important this practice is to help us unleash our imagination. Scientific findings from education experts, neuroscientists and psychologists across the globe have concluded that handwriting is fundamental for cognitive development and information retention.
This is not the first time Moleskine has taken part in London Design Week. In 2014, their first appearance in the festival, they presented the project Detour all around their stores in London. Detour consisted in displaying notebooks by well-known contemporary designers, which included the likes of Karim Rashid, Oki Sato, Kiki van Eijk, and many more.
Moleskine’s ethos has always been about fostering creativity through pen and paper, and their notebooks have been the vessels for so many great minds, from Vincent Van Gogh or Ernest Hemingway. These installations remind us to continue the tradition of capturing our creativity and great ideas so reconnect with pen and paper, and give your brain a workout
