Andu Masebo collaborating with heritage whisky makers The Singleton? We’ll drink to that
One of the leading luminaries in British design Andu Masebo launches a new furniture collection in collaboration with award-winning whisky brand The Singleton.
The ascent of object designer Andu Masebo has been informed by a certain scrappy, playful spirit. Whether he’s exhibiting furniture made out of a deconstructed car at London Design Festival or fabricating shelves for cups of tea, Masebo’s philosophy of slow craft and inventive use of existing materials remains a constant. For his unique designs, he’s been tapped by Marc Jacobs, SCP and the Financial Times as one of his generation’s most exciting designers.
A new collection for whisky brand The Singleton sees Masebo tackle that most classic of materials in both furniture and whisky: oak. Inspired by a trip to the Highlands, where oak trees grow in generous array and the Singleton’s whisky is distilled, the collection consists of multi-functional oak tables and chairs, bracketed with steel fixtures painted in the Singleton’s signature teal shade. As with Masebo’s other work, the collection emphasises functionality and simplicity, finding a balance between classic design elements and more contemporary flourishes.
The collection was launched with a workshop at the ARAM Gallery in London. Attendees were encouraged to create their own iterations of Masebo’s designs, which they could keep as souvenirs. By necessity, design as a language can be exclusionary – it’s hard to learn how to build a chair without a knowledge of engineering, a workshop and the correct materials. Workshops like Masebo’s are introducing a new paradigm, where skill sharing can be part of the process. We’ll drink to that!
Five of the Singleton x Andu Masebo objects will be available to buy via Malts.com, paired with a bottle of the Singleton’s 12 year old single malt.
