LA lifestyle brand Cult Gaia make their first foray into fragrance

Text by Matteo Pini

From the Rococo porcelain flasks of 18th-century France to the jade tubes of Qing Dynasty China, perfume containers have long enhanced the sensory experience of the fragrant liquids they house. So when Because learned of Cult Gaia’s new perfume launch, we couldn’t wait to see how the brand would apply its trademark ornamental philosophy to its bottles.

Retaining Cult Gaia’s trademark curvaceous design, it should come as no surprise that the Cult Gaia bottles are objets d’art unto themselves. Each bottle resembles an arch with a hole at its centre, allowing light to shine through. Completed with a marbled cap, of which no two are identical, the design looks to represent nature in its geological forms and infinite complexity.

A harmonious philosophy, finding synthesis in the meeting of opposites is echoed in the juice itself. Each perfume is named after a Farsi word, a nod to the Persian heritage of founder and creative director Jasmin Larian Hekmat, who spent two years developing the fragrance line. Mast (“intoxicating ecstasy”) is a blissful orange blossom and bergamot scent, Zan (“woman”) boasts musk and cardamom notes, and Noor (“light”) is a tribute to the Sun, with aromatic black pepper and lavender. The scents are liquid versions of Cult Gaia's acclaimed candle launch from earlier this year, letting you bring a little LA luxury to your everyday commute.

In ancient Greek mythology, Gaia refers to Mother Earth as an all-nourishing being, forever contributing abundance to the world. “The way I feel about great pieces, is the same way I feel about scent, it’s the fifth layer and enhances every moment,” says Hekmat on the project. “The same way I want our customers to remember their life moments through our clothes and accessories is what I want them to have with our fragrances.” With a fourth fragrance planned for next year, the Cult Gaia garden continues to bloom in gorgeous array.
