    Bling

From crystal-encrusted and clustered bracelets to geometric rings, bold metal pieces are de rigueur when it comes to making a statement this Christmas. Whether as a gift to yourself or someone special, a coruscating piece of jewellery is essential to be able to let go of everyday practicalities and truly embrace festive indulgences.

There is no better way to add a little (or, better yet, a lot of) sparkle in your holiday season. You can choose to be a bijou classicist and scintillate with an array of crystals, be it around your wrist with Miu Miu’s gold plated metal chain bracelet, around your neck with Prada’s brilliant plexiglass and metal necklace or discreetly from underneath your hair with Erickson Beamon’s petite but high-shine blue crystal and lucite hoops.

For the more audaciously inclined, the way to shine is through an intense beam of radiance that comes with unapologetically graphic pieces such as DJ by Dominic Jones’ sharp gold and enamel ring or Pamela Love’s bullet-shaped red jasper and bronze number. And for those for whom too much is not enough, our favourite French provocateurs Mouton Collet have come up with a layered spiky necklace in gunmetal and pearl python with enamel germanium tips that is sure to steal the show, along with any thrill-loving heart.

    Jingle all the way

Made to not only be seen but heard, the Valorie Bells clutch is, in Anya Hindmarch’s own words, “the maddest bag”; one that “announces your entrance whilst at the same time putting a smile on your face.” As if whipped up in Santa’s workshop [just swap the North Pole with her South West London studio] this clutch understands that getting there is half the fun. With the label’s signature bow motif engraved on each bell, this is one of many Willie Wonka-esque offerings that is part of Hindmarch’s “All I’ve Ever Wanted” collection – a feast of tongue-in-chic treats that will make the heart of any magpie skip a beat.

Whilst Christmas was not the overt intended reference, the first lady of bags confesses that family holiday traditions are a great source of her inspiration: “My most cherished Christmas memory is seeing all my bigger kids making traps for Father Christmas with the little kids.” Her own knack for contraptions and precious tiny objects goes a long way back. From the favourite gift she received when she was seven years old, a Holly Hobby Sewing Box: “I was as happy as you can be!”, to her family’s annual gathering around their “Christmas Machine, a German music box that plays carols and doubles up as a mini Santa’s workshop that has presents on conveyor belts which go into a machine and come out all wrapped!”

The Christmas Machine actually also inspired Hindmarch’s AW12 fashion week show – an animatronic conveyer belt extravaganza that has been partially recreated for her Christmas window installation and pop-up store at Selfridges.

The Valorie Bell is £895 and available on anyahindmarch.com and net-a-porter.com.

You can have any colour as long as it's black

Those who take their accessories seriously, particularly when it comes to handbags, will know that Valentino’s studded numbers are among the most coveted bags available. Imagine softer-than-soft leathers, clean shapes and details trimmed with flat square studs. So the news that the brand famous for their dresses in red, known as ‘Valentino red’, has taken styles from their classic Rockstud collection and made them exclusively in black should send many pulses racing. Designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli’s have cleverly tampered very little with their already winning formula of their Noir capsule collection. Switching styles to all black puts the emphasis on the quality of materials from python, crocodile and patent leather. Among the collection are pointed flats, Camden chic leather studded bracelets and totes.

Prices start at £535 for the Noir Rockstud sandal and the collection is available at Valentino’s Sloane Square boutique. valentino.com
